My girlfriend’s idea. I took some personality test and here are the results. I doubt they will interest anyone:

Your view on yourself:

Other people find you very interesting, but you are really hiding your true self. Your friends love you because you are a good listener. They’ll probably still love you if you learn to be yourself with them.

The type of girlfriend/boyfriend you are looking for:

You are a true romantic. When you are in love, you will do anything and everything to keep your love true.

Your readiness to commit to a relationship:

You are ready to commit as soon as you meet the right person. And you believe you will pretty much know as soon as you might that person.

The seriousness of your love:

Your have very sensible tactics when approaching the opposite sex. In many ways people find your straightforwardness attractive, so you will find yourself with plenty of dates.

Your views on education

You may not like to study but you have many practical ideas. You listen to your own instincts and tend to follow your heart, so you will probably end up with an unusual job.

The right job for you:

You’re a practical person and will choose a secure job with a steady income. Knowing what you like to do is important. Find a regular job doing just that and you’ll be set for life.

How do you view success:

You are afraid of failure and scared to have a go at the career you would like to have in case you don’t succeed. Don’t give up when you haven’t yet even started! Be courageous.

What are you most afraid of:

You are concerned about your image and the way others see you. This means that you try very hard to be accepted by other people. It’s time for you to believe in who you are, not what you wear.

Who is your true self:

You are mature, reasonable, honest and give good advice. People ask for your comments on all sorts of different issues. Sometimes you might find yourself in a dilemma when trapped with a problem, which your heart rather than your head needs to solve.

PRETENDING that video games are for children is to ignore an emerging form of art, argues game critic Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw.

IMAGINE the happy, idyllic world that the Australian censorship board wants us to live in.

The sun beats down upon rolling green hills where children of all creeds and nations link arms and skip merrily through the daisies, singing their simple innocent songs of joy.

Not a single confrontational thought crosses these children’s minds until the moment they turn 15, when they are wrapped in bin liners to cover their shameful pubescent bodies and dropped off a bridge.

It’s a lovely ideal. It’s also totally unlike the world in which we actually live.

Since there are only two people left in the country who think Australia doesn’t need an R18+ rating for games – those being South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson and the sock puppet on his hand –

Instead, I want to examine the issue from the artistic side of things. The question the ratings debate raises is this – creative freedom aside, does toning down adult themes in certain games make us at all culturally poorer?

At first glance, the answer is “not really”. When you’re talking about adult themes in games, you usually mean buckets of blood, bodily trauma and sweaty bosoms straining against alarmingly-lightweight armour. And there are few games in which such things are an immovable part of the message the game is trying to bring across.

Take something like the surreal and compelling Wii title No More Heroes. The US version featured dying enemies squirting out hilariously copious amounts of blood, while the censors insisted that the local version show them bursting into perfectly acceptable black ashes. At one point a woman being decapitated by a grenade became a woman being killed by having her face blackened, Loony Toons-style.

If you try to oppose changes such as these you have to argue that gore is essential to the intended experience, which isn’t the case and makes you come across as slightly psychotic. Let the censors have their petty moment of fuss – I hope their victory feels satisfying from their little temple of total bloody irrelevance on the moon.

But the refusal of classification for Silent Hill: Homecoming last month opens up a whole new can of giant carnivorous plague worms. Silent Hill is a horror series, and one of the best of its kind at that. Asking for a horror game to tone itself down for the kiddies is like sending an order of spaghetti back to the kitchen and asking that it be made less Italian.

Insofar as art can be said to have any definitive purpose, it exists to explore human emotions. One of those is fear. It’s one of the big ones, too – one of the old hands, still serving us as well today as it did thousands of years ago when Smilodons were casting shadows on the local cave wall.

Horror as a genre of art exists for the same reason as roller coasters and the terrorist watch list – because for the most part modern society is so stable and orderly and boring that the occasional artificial scare is what we need to make us feel alive.

Evoking fear is, in itself, an art form – and nothing in the entire history of storytelling has explored it better than video games.

That sounds like a pretty bold claim, but I genuinely believe it. Books can never be as unnerving as visual-based mediums because actually seeing a ghost always trumps reading the word “boo” – no matter how hard you embolden the text.

Horror movies are better, but very rarely advance beyond having the monster jump out on the business end of an orchestral sting. Even then a lot of them seem to be populated by the kind of heroes with such poor self-preservation instincts that you end up rooting for Jason just to get it over with.

In video games, the breaking down of the barrier between audience and protagonist creates an ideal environment to explore the science of fear.

Silent Hill 2, the pre-pre-prequel to Silent Hill Homecoming, is still my favourite horror experience of all time, in any medium. It doesn’t rely on clichéd jump-out scares, but instead creates a masterfully-sculpted atmosphere of creeping anxiety that grabs you by the throat and never lets go.

At the very start of the game, I was guiding the main character James Sunderland along a forest path towards the titular haunted town. For most of the way all was silent but for an oppressive background hum and the crunch of gravel under my feet. And then, as I walked, I heard a second set of footprints start up, keeping time with mine but clearly separate. I stopped. The other footsteps also stopped. I looked behind me, but couldn’t see further than ten feet into the fog. There didn’t seem to be anybody around. I continued walking and after a while the other footfalls started up again. And was it just my imagination, but were they a little louder than before?

It would be another twenty or so minutes before I encountered the first monster, but I was already on the edge of my seat – driven half-mad by the expectations and the subtle chipping away of my nerves.

James Sunderland might have had the combat skills of a prune and the voice acting of another prune, but the passive hostility of the environment coupled with the sense of “we’re in this together” caused me to develop a rapport and affection for him greater than any I’ve had for a character in a film or a book and probably any other video game.

Of course, that’s what made the endgame revelations about his past such a beautifully executed kick to the stomach.

You could argue that games don’t need to include gore to be this effectively scary, but that’s missing the point. It’s not just gore that makes this sort of thing unsuitable for children.

Consider how The Dark Knight got away with a rating of PG-13 in the US by skilfully not showing any blood. Does that make it any more suitable for children? Or will there be a generation of youngsters haunted by visions of white-faced sadists brandishing pencils? It’s a case of following the letter rather than the spirit of the law.

Silent Hill 2 isn’t just my favourite story-based video game – I’d go as far to say that I’ve never been affected as much by a story in any other medium. And it would never have worked as a film, as the creators of the Silent Hill movie adaptation deftly demonstrated.

If we willingly delude ourselves that video games are just for children and banish everything beastly and unwholesome, we miss out on something important. We miss out on a vital branch of art – the art of the grotesque, the unnerving, the terrifying.

With video games, this kind of art has an opportunity to grow in ways it never could before. Why shackle it?

I stumbled across a blog the other day run by a man named Tom Ellard, and a particular post caught my eye that I thought might be interesting. The next day, I found it linked from my film school teacher’s blog too. So it seems to be ACTUALLY interesting, as opposed to just what I find interesting.

Anyway, link is here and content is below.

Then:

Teacher: Learn these passages from the Bible by heart.

Student: I shall sir, but may I enquire as to the reasoning?

Teacher: This is the way it is done by all, and ye shall not quibble upon it.

Now:

Teacher: Here is Maya, you’ll be learning that.

Student: OK, but why Maya?

Teacher: It’s the industry standard.

Don’t be hard on poor teacher, it is the industry standard. But in tonight’s programme we’ll be asking just what makes something the industry standard? Sex? Drugs? Enormous space ships piloted by toads? Or something less obvious?

Industry standard applications are at first glance an ill sorted lot. For every prissy convoluted overly complex video editing tool there’s an almost Neanderthal audio suite. But after some reflection and much alcohol we can start to invent a common thread. As with Shakespeare’s villains we have a noble figure of humanity, troubled by a fatal flaw, which eventually leads to their failure.

Maya.

If you make 3D for a cinema there’s a 90% chance you use Maya. (Unless you’re one of those crazy bastards that uses Houdini because you also like riding your sports bike off a cliff onto a moving trampoline.) Recently Maya was bought by Autodesk because they wanted to lose money on two major applications instead of just Max.Yes, the leading 3D animation tools lose money hand over fist – the ones that actually sell are the ones that professionals would not touch with a stick. Here we can post a rule:

Rule 1: if it’s easy to use and very affordable it can’t be the industry standard.

The quality of Maya can be seen time and time again in the results. A nobleman among programs. But look at the interface:

Here we have dynamic menus, pop down menus, pop up menus, radial menus, ’shelves’, dialogues, and a really really bad case of iconitus. If this was a teenager it’d be ‘edgy’ or just ‘pimply’. Now I have very little experience with Maya so far and I may be yet to understand but either this interface grew over years of tinkering or the person that invented it has florid hebephrenic schizophrenia. Either way it breaks so many usability and educational concepts it needs a specially minted medal.

Pro Tools LE.

It’s been said before – it needs to be said again. There is a moment when you are teaching Pro Tools when you have to explain that if you have an hour long programme to bounce down and it’s due on air in 45 minutes, it’s Game Over. The student looks at you like you are insane, knowing at least 5 other programs that will export that audio in 5 minutes and asks, what is this?

You’ve got two ways you can run this message. Official: Pro Tools HD is hardware based and LE has to fit in with that and besides running the mix through the hardware insures always that what you hear in the mix down is what you get – no surprises. Alternative: That PT needs to pass that signal through that big fat blue dongle called an M box to make damn sure it’s a legit copy of PT. The student looks at you like you’re a tool either way.

When you get to RTAS, they are questioning you again. Yes that’s right, the effects that you use in Pro Tools only work in Pro Tools. Yes, industry standard means no one else in the industry uses them. No I am not a tool, kindly refrain from looking at me like that.

Rule 2: there has to be some convoluted reason why it won’t work with anyone else’s software.

Fortunately, Apple has come up with Audio Units as part of their ‘we are the computing equivalent of North Korea’ strategy. They make Digidesign look good. Speaking of Apple:

Final Cut Pro.

Most common question in any FCP class: why do we use this when every single other application we use is by Adobe? I have Premiere, why can’t I use that? Can I do this at home on Premiere instead? I tried barking at them but recently a stony silence showing lots of teeth seems to work best.

No kids, you have to pretend that the Pr isn’t next to Ae and Ps in the dock. Final Cut is the industry standard, and it’s much to do with a fight between Apple and Adobe over Intel versions that by a process of attrition let Henny Penny reach the top of the coop. Besides Final Cut is fun to use – it comes with games! Adventure game: move your mouse slowly over the interface looking for hidden features! Puzzle game: using the resize bar at the bottom of the timeline, puzzle out which way the timeline is going to zoom. Gambling game: which way will the fields in your PAL video export flip this time? Wish it came with a shoot ‘em up.

Rule 3: Overcoming arbitrary behaviour of industry standard tools provides teaching businesses with income.

Actually if you just want to edit video efficiently use Vegas.

Photoshop.

Ps is the good guy. The prince charming. If you ever grumble about photoshop then you need to be forced to use an alternative for a few days. That will learn you. If you are very bad we’ll make it The Gimp.

Quark.

Actually this is a cautionary tale. When I was a layout grunt, there was Quark. That was it. When Adobe first brought out Indesign, there was good natured shaking of heads. Everybody used Quark. The printers used Quark. What would you do with Indesign? There would be nowhere to get the damn thing printed! Just as I was ‘being made redundant’, a job came in from somewhere in Asia. An Indesign file. My job was to remake the whole thing in Quark, but we had to get Indesign to open it. It was a bit like Illustrator so that was alright, but no one more senior was going to touch the filthy thing.

Rule 4: Industry standards can change mighty fast.

“It’s such a nice country house we have here isn’t it, darling?”
“Yes, dear. The house is rather nice.”
“Well, I was actually referring to the location, dearest.”
“Oh, I see… Now that I come to think of it, the house is in a rather nice location.”
“Well, when I said a ‘nice country house’ I really was referring to the whole package of nice, country and house, which is a combination of niceness, location and the house itself.”
“I understand, dear.”
“I’m glad you do.”
Maggie and Clive Eainswick stood up from their opulent deck chairs, took off their opulent towels and walked into their opulent house, now dry from their afternoon swim and their scintillating banter. As they walked into the house, Clive queried “When are the guests arriving, darling?”
“In about a half hour, my dear. We should hurry.” replied Maggie.
“Yes, we should.” said Clive.
They did.
About half an hour later, a ring at the door announced the arrival of the first guest. It was the retired General Von Hitler Nuremberg, a family friend of the Eainswick’s. Maggie embraced him at the door.
“Oh, General! You are here, and the first to arrive too!”
The general disliked human physical contact. He did, however, put aside his dislike for a select few. One of those few was Maggie Eainswick.
“Yes, Frauline. I am the first. I am glad to be here.”
Clive stepped forward, not bothering to offer his hand. He was not one of the select few.
“Welcome back to our home, General! Here, I will show you to your room.”
General Von Hitler Nuremberg nodded and picked his baggage up, following Clive. Maggie stayed at the door to await the other guests.
Five minutes later, another ring at the door. Maggie opened it and there stood three people.
“Oh my! I didn’t expect to see so many of you at the same time, shouldn’t you all arrive separately?”
Jonathan, a wealthy doctor from London and a longtime lover of Maggie’s (With Clive’s knowledge, unfortunately, although they didn’t know that, unlike Heath and Jake, the other two arrivals.) walked forward and kissed Maggie on the hand. He said “Well, mon amore, we decided to all arrive at the same time, to stop you from waiting too long at the door for guests.” Jonathan was, however, disappointed at Maggie for not divorcing Clive and coming to live with him in London.
“Besides” boomed Heath, one part of a gay stockbroker duo who are the sons of millionaire stockbrokers in London, therefore giving them entrance into an upper-class dinner weekend like this, “if there was a school student writing about us, but having a paltry word limit, then we would help him by not having to write segues into each arrival.” Heath didn’t enjoy the way that Maggie looked down on him and Jake, just because they were different.
“True… True.” echoed Jake, the second half of the gay stockbroker duo, who was actually not gay but bisexual and was infatuated with Maggie. He hated the attention that she gave to Clive and Jonathan and resented that she didn’t love him instead.
Maggie, rather overwhelmed by this sudden barrage of compliments and witticisms, said “Very well, sounds reasonable. Thank you all for coming. Now, all into the house, and Clive will show you to your rooms. Dinner is in an hour and once again, thank you for coming.”
They shuffled in, and Maggie set off to the kitchen with the guests heading upstairs and Clive leading.
———————————————————-
Jonathan woke with a start. He was laying on the bed in his guest room, having a before dinner nap, when a wild shriek interrupted his dreams. It came from downstairs, so he ran straight there, looking around the house for the source of the commotion. The General, Clive, Heath and Jake were running around, frantic. They, too, were looking for the source. Suddenly, they all descended on the kitchen, the only place that they hadn’t looked yet.
Maggie was sprawled across the kitchen bench, with a knife through her heart and her neck cut. Blood was sprayed everywhere on the walls. Clive gasped. Jonathan gasped. The General gasped. Heath gasped. Jake gasped.
Clive wept.
Jake turned away.
The General breathed heavily.
Heath gasped again.
Jonathan squealed (don’t ask).
Clive, in between fits of weeping, spoke.
“Who could have done such a thing?”
The General, having seen death before, recovered before everyone else. “Well, the obvious answer is anyone of us. There has been no one else in the house, and not one of us has left.”
“Your right!” exclaimed Heath, “The question to be asked now is what motive do each of us have?”
The group looked around warily at each other.
Jake began.
“Well, first there is Clive, who resents Maggie for her relationship with Jonathan. Secondly, there is Jonathan, who resents Maggie for not marrying him.”
Clive spoke up with “Then there is Heath, who resents Maggie for her homophobia. Then there is the General, who doesn’t seem to have a motive, but could have possibly killed her as a way of getting over his old war nightmares.”
The General interrupted. “I assure you that that isn’t the case. The last person seems to be Jake, who has always had fancied Maggie, but resented her for her lack of interest in him.”
“I have never had feelings for Maggie, General!” Jake lied.
Heath stepped forwards, “Are you sure, Jake? Are you sure that you didn’t just creep into the kitchen while everyone was napping upstairs, kissed her on the back of the neck and, when she rejected you, you cut her throat and stabbed her in the heart in a fit of rage? Lets check, shall we?”
He walked over to the body and looked at the back of the neck. There was a mark where someone had kissed her. Heath lifted up his shirt, revealing a body covered in hickeys. He moved close to the body.
“My God! They match!” declared the General.
“Yes, they do! I would recognize them anywhere!” yelled Heath.
Clive pointed at Jake. “You killed her, Jake! You killed my wife!”
Jake stepped backwards, Clive advancing towards him. Jake toppled backward over Jonathan’s well placed boot and hit his head on the kitchen bench. He fell to the ground, unconscious. The General pulled Clive back. “Call the police, Clive. Let God sort him out.”
“Alright.” breathed Clive. “Alright…. Just get him out of my sight.”
He walked over to his dead wife’s body and embraced it.
The General walked into the next room and picked up the phone, dialing the police.
Soon, the echo of sirens sounded into the night.

The fundamental flaw in the whole ‘User Generated Content’ thing, seen in a multitude of games, social connection software and most obviously in the internet is simply that. Users create it. Whether its a new level or character model for a game, a song, a video, a novel or an application, the flaw remains that the majority of this content is created for the benefit of the creator and not really for the wider community. Sure, things made in garages for the creator’s friends and himself are sometimes useful to the wider community (Flickr and Skype being two major examples), but for the most part that doesn’t apply. This leaves a multitude of useless or hardly useful programs, videos, songs, poems or books that no one really needs or wants to read.

It all uses bandwidth. It all clogs up the intertubes. And its just not needed.

Sure, create what you want. Sure, even put it up on your blog that no one reads. But don’t advertise or present it as something for everyone else. If you wish to do so, design it to be like that from the beginning or at least adapt it so that things like Twitter’s current scaling issues don’t happen to you and don’t fuck us up.

Content is great. User-Created content, also great. Just…. I dunno, some kind of regulation would be lovely, because otherwise the internet, with its Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Reddit, Slashdot, Stumbleupon and its billions of blogs will turn into a giant version of Digg, where people put things up and if you have enough friends to vote for you, you become famous. If not, then you don’t, no matter the quality of your work.

I swear to God, if I wake up one morning and I see:

As much as I like Wall-E, below is the best plot synopsis I have read of it so far. Thank you Yahtzee!!!

I was dragged to see Wall-E last night. Now, objective quality of that film and possible anti-corporate agenda aside, here’s a small plot synopsis:

One or more lovable protagonists have existed for some time in a stable but fundamentally flawed routine, which is shaken up by the introduction of a foreign entity, usually another character, around whom attitudes are initially hostile. Attempts to deal with this character eventually lead to the protagonist(s) discovering a new, unfamiliar world, and in doing so discover the nature of the fundamental flaw in their routine. Villains are usually introduced or only become truly villainous from around the mid-point or quite late into the film. Along the way the heroes enlist the help of various lesser characters with clearly definable quirks and at one point reluctantly enter a high-speed chase. The villain is generally finally defeated with surprising ease, and everything concludes in an emotionally manipulative ending in which routine is restored with the fundamental flaw excised.

Now, consider how many Pixar movies that could be describing. Consider it, bitches.
